I have an opportunity this week to channel Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. In that book, she gets to use a time turner which allows her to be in two places at once. This week, a meeting our faculty and administration has long been interested in having has been scheduled. On Friday. On the first week I teach an Advanced Communication course. Exactly at the same time as the class.
My first response was to send my regrets. But then, I got thinking…
Last winter, following on with my interest in Teaching Naked, I toyed a few times with the idea of offering part of my class online on days when the weather was foul. I thought it through often, but what stopped me was knowing it would be difficult to contact each student at the last minute and let them know. Still, the idea percolated.
Then, over the last few months, I have heard our new college president speak out at strategic meetings and on Twitter about hybrid courses where part of the information is available in an online format.
The cogs in my brain started turning. Perhaps it is time to stop thinking about offering a hybrid section, and do something about it.
I ran it past our wonderful and supportive administration who were happy to let me pilot a hybrid course this Friday. I ran it past my students – it’s important to note, these are seasoned Semester 2 or 3 students – and they were game to give it a go as well. And so I can give a two hour class on Friday AND participate in the important meeting.
Hermione would be impressed.
I am currently in the middle of taking my planned class activities and notes and converting them to an online format. This is work because there has to be so much more structure when you are not overseeing the lesson. I will post my process and decisions and ultimately the outcome of this pilot project at a later date.
